Tim Edmonds - clubs and societies
I'm currently a member of several railway societies and take an active role in some of them. They include (in alphabetical order):
-
British Overseas Railways Historical Trust: Society dedicated to the study of the British influence on the development of railways worldwide. Publishes the British Overseas Railways Journal and has a library and archive at Greenwich.
-
Broad Gauge Society: For those interested in the history and modelling of Brunel's broad gauge railways. Publishes a glossy journal Broadsheet in Spring and Autumn each year.
-
Friends of the Slovenian Railways Museum: A small UK-based group of people who have been captured by the attractions of Slovenia, a small country with a rich railway heritage that is reflected in its excellent museum at Ljubljana. Produces a quarterly journal The Cornet. Please contact me by email for more information.
-
Marlow & District Railway Society: Formerly this was my local railway society, but I have maintained membership since moving to Somerset. In addition to organising monthly meetings with a variety of excellent speakers, it publishes a high-quality quarterly magazine, The Marlow Donkey.
-
Railway & Canal Historical Society: A society for those interested in Transport History which caters primarily for the amateur historian, with many members publishing the results of their researches in the Journal, published three times a year. I have been a member since 1975 and in 2004 set up the society's annual Book Awards scheme. I was elected a member of Council in 2007.
-
South Devon Railway Association: Supports the South Devon Railway which runs the Buckfastleigh - Totnes line in the traditions of a Great Western Railway branch line. This is a line with real atmosphere in a delightful riverside location.
-
West Somerset Railway Association: Supports the West Somerset Railway, which is one of the major British heritage lines. It was once my local railway and I worked as a volunteer in the Booking Office at Minehead station during the season. It runs steam and some diesel trains between Minehead and Bishops Lydeard for much of the year, with a variety of motive power, well-run special events and plenty of atmosphere. There is also an excellent unofficial website with lots of operational information and a frequently-updated photographic gallery.
